Kenyan AIDS Orphans

The Obara Family

Since 2005, Runnymede United Church has been connected with the Obara family in Nairobi, Kenya. Leonora and Andrew Obara have fifteen (!) children of whom 5 were born to them and they adopted 10 more whose parents died of AIDS. In Kenya, school is not free. The focus of Kenya AIDS Orphans Outreach has been to educate all 15 children. The oldest 11 are all educated and working. We’re now supporting the 4 youngest as they study nursing, law and engineering.

Here is an update on the Obara family!

Support and Education

Our many connections with the Obaras, including their visits to our church, have enhanced our faith as we witness their faith. We see the benefits of vulnerable children, adopted through faith, being raised in a loving family. They enthusiastically use the educational opportunities we provide. Our donations have made a measurable difference!

Connections and Success

Through this connection, we give and gain in understanding the benefits of living in both Canada and Kenya. We learn more about poverty, African issues and the value of families and education as well as expressing gratitude and joy through God’s love.

Village of Love

We’ve also participated, with Leonora and Andrew, in their development of a separate program to care for children orphaned by AIDS in a slum in Nairobi. Please see www.villageoflovecanada.org.
